I have a theory, which i'm currently trying to test very unscientifically, that good pop music died sometime in 1985 and i was just wondering what other people thought. When was its high point? When did it start to suck?

this site makes thread necromancy waaay to easy.

but anyway, good pop is far from dead. sebastien tellier, the black kids, vampire weekend, retro stefson, cut copy, holy hail...there are a ton of great pop bands around.

Sometime towards the end of the 80s. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it was definitely around then. I actually like Michael Jackson's music and he was the definition of pop music back in the day. Today people associate pop with Brittney Spears and the like - which is a totally different sort of pop music.

I think it was late 80s that it was on it's way out though.
