China has come under fire for allowing tigers to be bred for the production of so-called "tiger bone wine".

The drink is reportedly made by steeping tiger carcasses in rice wine. Those who drink the wine believe it makes them strong.

Chinese delegates at the International Tiger Symposium in Nepal are arguing for the lifting of a current ban on the trade in tiger bones and skins.

But other Asian nations with threatened tiger populations want the ban to stay.

Emotive issue

There has been a forceful exchange of views on the issue at the symposium, according to the BBC correspondent in Kathmandu, Charles Haviland.

Experts say there are several reasons why tiger numbers have drastically declined, but just one has grabbed the limelight, our correspondent says.

The argument centres on the existence of so-called "tiger farms" in China, which have bred thousands of captive tigers with the ostensible purpose of entertaining visitors.

But the conservation group WWF, which is chairing the symposium, says these farms are fronts for the production of tiger bone wine.

WWF also says the captive tigers cannot survive in the wild, and believes the production of wine and underhand trade in skin and bones also threaten to make wild tiger poaching more lucrative.

A senior WWF official said the discussions were heated, with Chinese academics saying their country should lift its ban on the trade in tiger parts.

But experts from states like Nepal and Bangladesh, which have threatened tiger populations, are urging that the ban should remain.

On Wednesday, a more formal forum of government delegations will begin discussing the fate of the majestic beast, which a recent television poll declared to be the world's most popular animal.

What I find most disturbing (with cruelty to life aside) is that there are still so many superstitious cultures today that believe things without any rational reason or logic behind it.

Sharks can't get cancer, so let's eat their cartilage.

Rabbits are good jumpers and runners, so their feet must be lucky.

Tigers are strong, so if we grind up their bones it must make us strong.

Shit... Seriously, some people will believe anything simply because it seems the most plausible without actually really looking for the reality behind it.

We still live in a world where most of us still believe and live by fairy tails (sadly).

The problem with the world is that the fanatics are so arrogantly sure of themselves, while the open-minded individual remains filled with doubts.

Lev (6:43pm): make em feel right at home

Lev (6:41pm): u should put on that nwa song while they r there

UndyingFantasy (6:25pm): weeee. they're here. time for the fun.

UndyingFantasy (6:15pm): speaking of fucking cops.. where are they?

UndyingFantasy (6:13pm): i saw a funny clip on youtube the other day.. the cop gave a guy a long piece of white tape to lay on the ground to walk.. he was like 'alright, let me walk this way and when i tell you to, just put it down'.. well, when the guy went to put it down.. he just face planted straight into the pavement. the cop was like 'well, this sobriety test went well'

Lev (6:09pm): drunks are some of the funniest people they bust. especially when they lie or go with the "i only had two beers" routine while they are struggling to stand up

UndyingFantasy (6:08pm): i'm still trying to find that show.. it's just basically going thorugh the process of booking people.. and they bring in lots of drunks who get angry and have to be restrained.

Lev (6:07pm): hahaha.. i love those ones. usually its so obvious, and then there is some ignorant guy picking one up.. its funny cause most the time i see those hookers, the cops never arrest the one looking for sex because they figure its more of punishment to let them know they picked up a guy

UndyingFantasy (6:05pm): he caught a prostitute and she was like 'i swear i won't tell anyone and i won't charge you for sex if you let me go' and he was like 'lady, you're crazy' and then come to find out..the prostitute was a guy.

UndyingFantasy (6:05pm): when i was in high school i took some law studies class.. so we got to have a cop come in and show his old tapes.. he brought the funny ones
