I thought I was contributing quite a bit to the community, with some 70+ posts and 11 written reviews, but it seems I have already been suspended.
I received a message stating my account was temporary suspended - a time was not given.
The reason - derogatory use of the word "retard".
It claims that if I want more information I should click a link to review my moderation history - upon doing so it tells me:
"Excellent job! None of your contributions have been moderated."
I cannot even recall using the word, so I am left wondering when and where I used it, if I indeed did. The site is telling me different, and I haven't been given any proof right now so I am a bit irritated.
What I find most amusing about the entire situation is that even if I did use it, I find that absolutely laughable. The word "retard" has made it's way into common English slang a long time ago and does not necessarily refer to handicapped indivudals (which is what they are saying I violated). The word "retard" derives from Latin and means "slow", so to claim it directly indicates offensive behavior is incredibly asinine.
I hope this little story makes some of you here appreciate just how much you can say freely on this community without ever having to fear being punished for doing so.
This little episode has brought a harsh reminder to me of why I never bother participating in communities elsewhere to begin with.
Someone please tell me I am not the only one who thinks this is absolutely ridiculous?
I just paid $40 for a total access membership and I am already considering telling them to shove it and delete my account. I don't know right now - all I know is that is retarded. --- "Gamespot.com suspends my ac...ek)" has been viewed times ---

| | Wow, that is ridiculous. I would definitely tell them to shove their premium.
And you have no idea how appreciative I am that you dont ban or punish people for language or outlashes. I would be so banhammered by now. LOL.
So thanks for being incredibly magically delicious. XD~~~~~~~~~~ "We're like 711, we may not be doin' business but we're always open."

| | Well, I finally managed to obtain the source for where I committed this atrocity.
In the Wii forum, someone had a thread about Super Mario Galaxy, asking why all the extra lives you earn are lost when you continue loading a game after saving. Here is my exact response (which I was suspended for):
-----
"Because it is retarded like that.
It makes no sense because it completely eliminates earning many extra men. I'd have sometimes 20 and when I'd save I'd lose them all.
They should have done away with lives in general since many levels make you restart from the beginning as it is.
If you talk to the toad towards the beginning he sometimes gives you 5 from the princess."
--
Since I was the first user who had replied to this thread, the thread creator was appreciative for my response.
In no way was what I said even targeted at anything other than the game, and even then, if one looks up the word retarded, we can see "To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede. ". According to this exact definition, I hardly see how what I said could be taken offensively. I was referring to a poor feature of a game being backwards (or slow) and limiting (or impeding) your progress in the game. I recall the the word "retard" deriving from Latin, and literally translated would mean "slow". So a word that has evolved into commonplace slang has also evolved into a taboo topic of political-correctness, so I am somehow being punished for the use of a word which in no way seeks to offend anyone.
I don't know about this site.
I've been visiting it for years (probably close to a decade), but it wasn't until just recently that I decided to sign-up as a member and participate in the community. It seems already that there are some serious issues with the powers that be here. Someone is obviously either on a power-trip, or seriously damaged from too much politically-correct thinking. Shit, everything can be taken offensive by someone with an opinion - why don't we just limit the English language to a few broad emotions to describe feelings, if we are going to become so overly obsessed with not trying to offend someone from everything we do.
Maybe I'm just overreacting too much, but I find the whole situation completely pathetic. Aren't we getting a little bit too touchy about everything now?

And yes, the rumor is that Jeff Gerstmann was canned for his review of Kane and Lynch. They have, of course, denied it, but I can't imagine anyone actually admitting up to something like that anyhow. I don't know whether it really happened or not, but I know they have some problems.
Their terms of use does state that being a paid subscriber doesn't provide you with any immunity, which I complete agree with, and understand. I don't expect them to treat me any better, but I don't think any of their members 'ought to get harassed for the lamest of things. Oooh wait, maybe "lame" is offending some handicapped too.
I thought most web sites were more liberal today. Whenever I visit a myspace or youtube page I always see all sorts of obscenities.
So what's the deal here - are many communities this restrictive?~~~~~~~~~~ The problem with the world is that the fanatics are so arrogantly sure of themselves, while the open-minded individual remains filled with doubts.

| | god damn!!!!!! i think that's fucking bullshit, you payed for the membership, right there that means you bought your rights to say whatever the fuck you please, derogatory or not, besides don't we have freedom of speech??? whatever happened to that little line from our bill of rights, tell'em to shove it and give you your money back.
what's the point of creating a community and having people attend to it if when they speak their mind they get banned??!~~~~~~~~~~ absolutely all stupid
