You're probably all familiar with the normal mechanism we've had in place to inform you when you have a new private message (where when you browse around, you are redirected to the inbox when you have a new message).

This has now changed, hopefully for the better.

Instead of redirecting you, you will first hear a sound, and then a pop-up will appear. If you click "OK", you will be sent to the inbox, whereas if you click "Cancel" you will remain on that page, and the pop-up and sound will not launch again until you click another page. And now you do have some time to click around before even being prompted to redirect (I think it's about 10 seconds now), which means you can still click around and do quick tasks for a short bit before a redirection is prompted.

Also, the "inbox" button should now fade in whenever you have a new message.

Oh, and because the system has changed, this means you may want to update your settings.

There are two new settings (which means you can enable either / or both the pop-up notification and sound effect). Tick the box to receive the pop-up notification, and select a sound effect from the selection menu in order to enable a sound effect.

Can someone on IE verify whether or not sound effects on TT are playing for them?

I think activex does come pretty much as a standard now. I know it is used for almost everything anymore. I "think" when you download IE now it even asks you if you want to download the newest version.

I'm honestly not sure why the sound wouldn't go thru at first. As soon as that message popped up saying I had a new message another small pop ran across that screen saying something about activex. I tried again and got the same thing so I clicked on the activex box and it asked if I wanted to run activex. So either it was turned off or it just needed permission for the sound effects. Sometimes it's hard to tell because the stupid anti-virus software I have will block stuff like that and then ask if you want to run it.

Thanks for that update, Gollumsteed - I appreciate it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the activeX object enabled by default on most new setups? I assume this must be the case because (again, correct me if I am wrong) doesn't AJAX itself also require ActiveX?

For example... like the "who's online at a glance" or "chatter box" refreshing without loading the whole page.. This is AJAX. This stuff doesn't work in IE without ActiveX either, right?

It's nice to hear you at least get some sound effect without ActiveX enabled... guess that's better than nothing. Just hoping most folks on IE have ActiveX.

For IE as long as ActiveX is running the sound effects will work. Otherwise, all anyone using IE will hear is a blip no matter what sound effect they choose. But you still get a sound either way.

quoting NeroAnima:

Haha, I like the sound effects a lot, tons of funny ones Good job, as usual

In case anyone is wondering why most sound effects feel unrelated to this messenger notification, it's because I've been considering adding sound effects in chat too, so most of the sounds I've found so far were with this in mind.
