I've only been to the one in Amsterdam as you know so I can't really say. Plus, I didn't really wanna look at the hookers, they even giggled or something at me

I'm sure it's no mystery that during my trip to Amsterdam, I checked out De Wallen, the world's most famous red light district.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Wallen
Ironically, the center of the red light district seems to be somewhere around the Old Church - thankfully a coffeeshop of the same name is right smack dab across the street from the church.
Anyhow, the red light district is made up of countless sex shops (sex toys, porn), peep shows and other adult themed hangouts. I believe I saw at least a couple homosexual clubs/bars.
So there I am puffing on this huge fucking joint that contains more than a gram of my white widow mixed in with whatever this other American dude bought. I was talking to him about the place, and asked how far in the district did you need to go before you'd start seeing "stuff", and he just laughed at me.
Apparently, we were sitting just meters away from one of the biggest hooker streets in the district. Right on the other side of the Old Church coffeeshop was a network of some narrow alleys, lit up red by all the neon lights, with women in bras and panties (or bikinis) standing right up against a sheet of glass posing, combing their hair, or just acting oblivious to the fact that less than a meter away from them, on the other side of a sheet of glass, is a sea of (mostly men) people checking them out, and some who are just "shopping".
Of course being as close to the prostitutes that you are, pictures are absolutely forbidden - so I didn't even try.
lol
In my mind I had always envisioned something like where you see these buildings with women on upper floors in the windows for you to pick from. I had always had a mental image of this being more discreet and from a greater distance. I never would have imagined the alleys would be less than 2 meters wide (in some places) with booths of hookers on both sides of you.
Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands (which I've always agreed with, I've always been for the legalization of prostitution as it is a moral and health issue, not a criminal issue), so these streets are no mystery. In fact, probably half of the tourists that come to Amsterdam will at least set foot in some parts of the red light district.
From what I've read online (and seen on t-shirts!) the rate is 50 Euro for a 20 minute suck and fuck. Some of the girls (or many actually) do probably have pimps, even though the practice is legal and taxed. The pimps typically bring in customers for the girls.
I saw a hilarious shirt that made me bust up laughing in a mainstream souvenir shop:
"HOME FUCKING IS KILLING PROSTITUTION"
Something else which was really funny was, in our welcome brochure that the hotel gave us, there is all this random information. It even mentions tips and info on the red light district and purchasing sex, and what to do if you have problems with a girl or pimp, etc... Anyhow, it also makes it very clear that "not all of the girls you see are really girls!"
So anyhow, I was wondering who has ever been to a red light district before in real life, and if you have, was it anything like what I've described?
