Well with the release of Watchmen on Friday, I figured now is a good time to post about comics. What are some of your favorites? Any recommendations?

I really enjoyed the Preacher series, along with The Boys and Transmetropolitan. Of course I still have to go old school give the Marvel Universe props in general. The Civil War series is phenom.

Just found an interesting piece saying there is a Boondock Saints comic just coming out. Apparently it's the origin of Il Duce, and written by Troy Duffy himself. If anyone can get hold of it, or just have a flip through, I'd be greatful to know if it's going to be any  good when it gets released over here

Lately I 've been looking at some of the books of old comic art I can find at the local public library.
My current favorite comic artist is Basil Wolverton. I especially like his surrealistically ugly cartoons and caricatures of people with ridiculously long noses and big bulging eyeballs such as his cartoon of "Lena the Hyena."
He worked for Mad magazine and marvel comics. I can't think of too many other cartoonists who created such outrageous images except maybe Terry Gilliam's cartoons for Monty Python and R. Crumb's style seems like it could have been influenced by Wolverton.
Another comic artist I noticed was Wallace Wood. I like his porno-satire of all the Disney characters:

OK, I put Crisis on pause for a while once I realised there was more Fables. This was a mistake. I've caught up with the last few issues of Fables, and to be frank, they suck. I know given the way the first 75 issues went, it would take a while for things to come together, but unfortunately, I'm not conviced that's going to happen, which is a real shame.

I'm trying to find somewhere that stock the Courtney Crumrin comics, as I seem to have misplaced mine, because they were rather funny. Worth having a glance over at any rate.

Watchmen was watchable, and by no means the atrocity i was expecting, but it wasn't all that fantastic. I still felt let down by it.

On another note, I've just finished Y: The Last Man. Very good read, it's definately worth flicking through.

I'm about to start on reading Crisis on Infinite Earths, so when I'm done i'll give you my review!

personal review of Watchmen--the movie.
Maybe not the best movie ever made but it was worth the eight dollars I spent and I can think of worse ways to kill a couple of hours (or simply name a few of the other movies I'd seen recently.)

30 Days of night was good, I enjoyed that. I started Y, but haven't gotten around to finishing it yet.

For anyone interested, I've got scans of most of the comics I've mentioned, as well as most of the Hellblazer stuff, and the first run of the Dark Tower comics, which are really good, the artwork took me by surprise, marvel have never really wow-ed me before.

i never really got into the whole DC and Marvel stuff, just didn't hit the spot for me really.

I need to finish reading the Watchmen; I got the trade a while back but didn't finish it for some reason.

I have the first issue of Iron Man (it's almost as old as I am--MAY 1968).
I also have the first issue of Submariner which came out in the same month.
Those are my favorite comics. I wonder what they're worth now. I bought them for eight dollars each when I was ten years old--and they still say just 12 cents a copy on the cover!
When I first collected comics I looked for weird surreal stuff like Dr.Strange or mythology like Thor--but I seem to have lost them.
Where I live nowadays I dont' see too many places to buy them so I often wonder what new comics are like. I usually don't know until they make a movie like Watchmen
peace

Watchmen is a must read, but then again, so is pretty much all Alan Moore. V for Vendetta is brilliant, as is the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The artwork isn't the best, but the writing is top notch.

Transmet is another that's been mentioned already, but it is brilliantly scripted and well drawn. Any Hunter S. Thompson fan should read this, it's pure gonzo journalism.

The Sandman is something else. Fantastically crafted tales of the downfall of Lord Morpheus, Dream of the Endless, and the effect of his character and the surrounding events on the rest of the universe.

Lucifer is another must read, especially after Sandman. Brings a whole new twist to the legendary bad guy of christianity.

while i'm on Neil Gaiman comics, The Books of Magic deserve a mention. Forget Harry Potter, he's just a rip off (he actually is) of young Timothy Hunter.

For those of you with a penchant for the slightly odd and disarming, Fables is worth a glance. All your favourite fairy tale characters, like you would never have dared nightmared about seeing them.

And for the totally demented and psychotic amongst us, Jhonen Vasquez provides more insanity than you can shake a stick at with Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. If you've seen Invader Zim, you'll know of Jhonen Vasquez, but will never quite be prepared for Johnny.
