When I was 14 he was my hero. I was a terrible reader of literature then so I think I was probably not the best Poe fan--I basically spent much more time reading a biography of Poe and trying to be like him than I did reading his poetry and stories. A year ago I read Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and that affected me the way some of Poe's short stories did when I was a teenager--so I probably prefer Wilde to Poe these days. But it's been a while. I remember "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Masque of the Red Death".
After I was into Poe I discovered Ingmar Bergman's movie "The Seventh Seal" about the bubonic plague in Europe. I've seen it many times--I think it's a bit like Poe's "Masque of the Red Death"
