I know a large portion of you are readers here so I thought I would ask where you like to escape to.

I have always liked Tolkien of course. I also like many others and some of them have a lot of work in other genres so I will specifically include many.

I like H.P Lovecraft's Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath and many others but most of his definately falls under horror.

Along the lines of Dark Fantasy I also enjoyed The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

I like most of Neil Gaiman's books especially Neverwhere and American Gods

I recently read Dianna Wynne Jones' Castle in the Air and Howls Moving Castle and those were pretty good.

What is yours?

I recently read an author called Emma Bull who wrote two books called War for the Oaks and Finder. They were ok. Sort of a distracted writing style like the writer had ADD or something. Some may be interested enough to look into it though!

that sounds kind of distracting. personally I never got really into a lot of the heavily serialized fantasy for that reason almost. After the first however many it just fizzles. I have only been rapt fascinated enough with a few series to keep going until the end.

yes yes, it is by robert jordan... the only thing that bothers me up to book five is how whore like one of the main male character can be. in the story, he's the "hot stud" that all the other female characters kinda slobber all over him, and he can't seem to choose who he wants to be with...

That is kind of a Dark Fantasy piece and a short example of H.P. Lovecraft at the same time. Now even though it is a little winded for our reading of today it is quite awesome in my opinion.

I think that sounds correct... There are other tower references in Eyes of the Dragon as well specifically to the wastelands that you might enjoy. Personally I have liked all the tie ins I think except Hearts in Atlantis.

quoting xcom:

you will like Eyes of the Dragon it is quite good and you get to meet Flagg in it!

Why else do you think i want to read it? It's Randall fucking Flagg!!!

Speaking of whom, do you think that it's Flagg in Storm of the Century? I only ask given that one of his names is given as Legion.

quoting sadistikaa:

Ive always adored Stephen King's Eyes of the Dragon. One of his few non-horror novels. Ive probably read and reread that about 10 times.

Thats on my list of SK to read. I've been devouring everything even remotely related to DT, it's quite sad really!

I've barely even begun the series, but so far i'm well and truly engross in Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. The biggest bastard ever.

The A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin is excellent dark fantasy. And I dunno, I like the Dresden Files.:-p
