This was an awesome book. I had to read a book for Swedish class and do a report on it, so I chose "Djurens Gård", which is the translated version of George Orwell's "Animal Farm". It was the first book I ever read in Swedish and it was great.
I think I liked the book so much and would like to get all the symbolism so much that I plan to purchase the english version and re-read it.
Basically it is the story of a farm of animals who are tired of the way they are treated by their farm master, Mr. Jones. He is an alcoholic, he neglects them, they go without food sometimes and he uses them for all that man needs.
When Mr. Jones is away, the farm comes to life and the animals unite and form a philosophy called "Animalism". They revolt and take over the farm and strive to end the tyranical rule of man. They spread their philosophy through the neighboring farms, they create a flag, have ceremonies and work hard for a pleantiful harvest.
The problem is, it's the pigs who are benifiting (and the dogs; the pigs henchmen) who are benifiting most from the new order.
It is a fable which paralells the rise of communism and the struggle the people have to overcome tyranny, but then instead create a philosphy which serves only the elite any better.
The pigs learn to walk, talk, read, wear humans cloths, sleep in their beds and so forth, thereby completely braking every commandment they initially set forth. It's a great account of how power corrupts no matter what. People always look out for their best interests and their agendas tend to always suit what they desire, not what is best for everyone.
I think it's an absolutely awesome and creative story which tons of metaphors. The smarter you are and the more educated you are, the more you will be able to read between the lines in this book.
I strongly suggest it to anyone, especially those interested in human behavior or philosophy. George Orwell did an amazing job at giving emotions and personalities to the animals of the animal farm.
Whether you are communist, capitalist or socialist it has a lot to say and I strongly recommend it to anyone who has not read it before.
PS, I have heard there was an animated motion picture of this as well as a live motion picture (such as babe). Has anyone ever seen either of these?
Check it out! You won't regret it!

12:43pm - January 22 2008I read it the other day. I know it's supposed to be about communism. I guess people who are interested in that aspect could read Orwell's non-fictional book "Homage to Catalonia" about his experiences in the Spanish Civil War and see how that affected his ideas about communism.
Of course it could be about all revolutions in general, where the people who led the revolution turn out to be hypocrites more or less eventually. Like even the American Revolution-- they were supposed to be in favor of the idea that "all men are created equal" but after that they restricted the vote to people who owned so much property, and it took more than a hundred years for people to accept the fact that women are equal too and almost two hundred years to extend equal rights to African-Americans.

2:24pm - March 30 2006the animated version of the film was good , but not as good as the live action film with Pete Pothleswait as Garmer Jones, that was excellent, regardless of how it may have seemed to be aimed at kids, the anti-communist, power corrupts message is there plain for all to see
