Is Dyslexia Real? « psychology

While reading over a few news sites this morning I came across an "interesting" article Here. Apparently an Educational Psychologist at Durham University is making this big deal about Dyslexia being nothing more than an excuse for the middle class and lack of comprehension and illiteracy. They go on to mention that a large portion of the population diagnosed with this disability are only doing so for increased educational funding and electronic learning aids.

I was just curious as to what everyone else thought of this? I personally think its a bunch of shit. I, personally have never been dyslexic but my ex girlfriend was. While I can agree that not all cases are legitimate, that doesnt mean that it isnt a true illness.. or an epidemic that doesnt need further research.

My teacher says he's dyslexic. He also says he cannot tell the difference between right and left. He can however, he claims tell the difference between top and bottom.

I am dyslexic... there is evedence... I have a degree (in maths sadly) yet I still can not spell but that is not evedence.

I have on various occasions had my IQ tested and while all my scores are high for 3 out of 4 parts I tend to score in the 140s... for one part I score in the 127.... apparently that is a problem, showing I am dyslexic

Whether I am or am not dyslexic is not the problem, but I have a problem so if apparently annomanus proff from Durram belevies I am not can he provide a better diagnosis?

I my self am severely dyslexic I fit all the criteria and have be tested by professionals, I am insulted by the ignorance’s of this professor.

Dyslexia is something which causes a different way to thinking, something that’s causes peoples to favorer other apexes of intelligent over written text. I my self can read but have the spelling of an eight and a half year old yet and am 16 currently. At 9 year old was told I have the average intelligent, in problem solving spoken word comprehension and of a 17 teen year old and the visual understanding for way above my years. I had many test done and none which were not written like school tests or majority of tests. No written test can accurately test the intelligent of a dyslexic person as it as it prays of the weakness of that of some one with dyslexia and this is were it becomes a disability. The world is recorded by world and is a simple means of communication so is seen easy and something most can do by the age of 7 easily, but this is not the cause of dyslexic people and can not be dismasts as a lake of intelligent of a lake of pore teaching yes there are other ways of teaching someone dyslexic but the hole school system is basted one words even sciences is full of them and this is how your intelligent in tested and tort. Often dyslexics people have different of or complex interest and understanding which are not school subjects and in tests the insight and knowledge that one has can not be expressed instead a unique way.
This world recorded by word.
It is not a mere accuse for middle class lack of comprehension, I am middle class and have had all the support from my parents in getting good tauter get my condition still exists heavily

No one how has experienced or meet someone with dyslexic and can state that they that it is not in existence and is just pore education. of caused by the general public are not like this and in Australia only 8% are dyslexic and it can be often falsely diagnosed so many people no not suited to earning styles that often suit dyslexic people and then give the appearances that dyslexia is unintelligent.

I have a high IQ (i know. i was tested)
I made a 1260 in my SATs (and even took a nap)
I'm upper-middle class
I'm mildly dislexic and have ADHD

I just assumed that my brain was moving faster than my hands (or fingers when i type). I never knew that i was an intelligent, upper-middle class caucasion male suffering from a mild case of bull shit... who knew... haha

everyone in my fathers side of the family has been diagnosed with dyslexia. i didn't know about this until i was 15 and noticed that every time some one said turn right or left i always went the opposite way as instructed. i am borderline genius. and still struggle with spelling and right and left instructions.

I would say that more times than not I will mix up numbers if I am not focusing on them. and when reading I am fully aware that when I see a word I see a group of letters that then i have to think about what they could be before I see then in real order example recnlyte is what i first see but I know that it is really recently because i have trained myself over time. it is most noticable when I read out loud beacuse of the add brain function i have to slow down or guess at a bunch of words.

so I think that it is real

i think my dad is dyslexic. he's always mixing up his numbers and letters.

then again, he's left handed. and you know what they say about those left-handers.

it's weird though. he can say the alphabet backwards without thinking about it. one day i was like 'hey dad, can you say the alphabet backwards' and he just.. did it. he never practiced it, or thought about it. he can also do insane math in his head. i'm talking multiplying 7 digit numbers by other 7 digit numbers and getting the same answer my calculator gives me.

but who knows.

i think dyslexia is real though.

I have had a girlfriend who was dyslexic, and I can't say that it was or wasn't a cop out. It seems like a perfectly legitimate illness, but I am not a doctor so I cannot argue for or against it with any scientific accuracy.
