When governments fear the people there is liberty. When the people fear the government there is tyranny. -- Thomas Jefferson

Okay... So there's this lab technician at work. Just to give you a little perspective into her personality, she's about 350 pounds and is mad at the world because she's fat. She used to be a devout Mormon until they said something about gluttony being a sin and God being the cure if you accept him into your life. Well she took that to mean that she didn't have God in her life and left the church to become a devout baptist. Not just a baptist, but one of those giant churches that get tons of money and do televangelist stuff and you can just blend in the back and say your a christian and not do anything at all. All the while, she is a devout outspoken registered republican. I think that pretty much sums it up.
Well the other day I was having a discussion/debate with my partner (who is an atheist/aspiring socialist) like we always do. It's fun. We go back and forth and laugh and call each other idiots and find things that we agree on and things we don't and it's all in good fun. Until SHE came along. Well my partner the socialist atheist thinks it's great fun to pester the republican christian, and I end up being the mediator. Well somewhere in the beginning she thought I was on her side. But as the argument progressed and she realized that wasn't the case, this statement left her lips:
"Oh! You're not a republican! You're a libertarian!"
What the fuck does that mean!? I've heard the word before, but never thought about it. And I haven't really taken the time to look it up. Ironic that I would take the time to make a post about it when I don't even know if it's a compliment or an insult.
Somebody help me out here. I'll grab a dictionary definition and put it up as a reply later just as a point of reference.
* * * NOTE * * *
I'm not able to use the reply link from my blackberry, so I'm editing the post for clarification. The most confusing thing about her statement of observasion was the tone she used. It can only be described as excited disgust. Like she had just seen some species thought to be long extinct. I was thoroughly confused how someone could make such a personal assumption about someone they hardly knew when the conversation was about welfare, social security, and taxes.

10:00am - April 23 2009That is actually quite entertaining she would say that since Libertarians have such a close agenda to republicans. The libertarian party is a growing party that gained a lot of votes this last election year due to people disgusted at the failures of the republican party in itself. Their main ideas are similar to all the things republicans preach about. Smaller government, lower taxes, greater individual freedom. Basically they are overall a centrist political party with very little desire to infringe on our basic values. In my opinion she gave you a compliment. But then also in my opinion hearing you are anything but a democrat or republican IS a compliment.
