First off, I will start by stating the PSP is an awesome system regardless of it's appearant "pixel problems".

In summary, the reason I gave the woman my cash to buy the PSP was because I have some superstitious feeling that for some reason there is some overbeing watching over me always trying to screw me when it comes to screens and such. When I bought my first laptop, a few stuck pixels. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and a think like that can drive me crazy, so I took it back. Second laptop, same deal. This time I got really lucky because I tried rubbing the screen to make it ripple and the stuck pixel instantly dissapeared! What a frigging relief. Sadly though, my current laptop has several dead or stuck pixels.

So then when I was ready to buy my big flat screen 19 inch TFT I got worried it would have pixel problems since after reading up on it, "dead pixels" are not considered "defective" by most hardware producers and each screen is allowed to have up to a certain percentage of non-working pixels before it is considered malfunction. Low and behold my Sony flat screen had one... Well, it's sorta a half dead pixel, because you only see it on grays, blues and pinks. You can never see it through whites, blacks and most of the other colors.

On to my PSP...

Needless to say when I was about to buy my PSP I was a bit worried I would encounter similar problems seeing as these screens also use TFT technology.

And of course the cosmos didn't differ from what I thought and low and behold my PSP has a few.

The biggest annoyance is one which is near the absolute bottom right corner. It looks to be a hot pixel.

I also have 2-3 others (that I know of) which look to be either hot or stuck. One of them appears to almost certainly be a stuck pixel (blue) and is somewhat near the center of the screen. Fairly annoying as well but not quite as visible as the hot pixel in the bottom right.

I think there are also 2 more faintly hot pixels that I can notice once in a while at the right angle (but not as annoying).

So I was a bit dissapointed of course. I don't think I will even attempt at taking it back (even so, there is no guarantee I could since it isn't considered damaged) and I'm trying to tell myself to live with it and get over it cause it seems almost all TFTs have these problems today.

The ironic thing is that the odds are that *almost* everyone has one on their PSP, LCD or Plasma TV if they go looking hard enough for it, and the only people who do are those who get bothered by it! *bangshead*

I did quite a bit of research and found out that the PSP was known for having quite wide spread "issues" or complaints with the pixels and their customers. Gamespot.com rounded up all their PSPs and said that out of all they had in the office about 50% had at least one dead pixel.

I found another site, where some people were claiming as many as 20 dead or stuck pixels and even some people who said they had entire vertical or horizonal lines of dead pixels.

So anyway, do you have a PSP? And if you do, does it have any pixels with problems? How many that you know of?

Do pixel problems annoy the hell out of you, have you learned to deal with them or have they never concerned you?

Just for the record:

dead pixel: a pixel that has no life; constantly black or without color
hot pixel: a pixel that is constantly "lit" and always on; white
stuck pixel: a pixel that has become stuck or burned in; usually red, green or blue

I would also like to provide a "fix" for many of you who have "stuck pixels". I came across a site that had a video you can download to your PSP and run it and it may get rid of any stuck pixels!!! Some people ran it for as much as 12 hours or more with no luck, while some ran it for even less time and it cured their pixel problems! All in all, about 60% of those running the video say their pixel problems were fixed after running this video on their PSP for a long enough time period!

I still do not have a USB cabel to connect my PSP to the PC (I'm waiting for it in the mail) so I can't try it out yet. If someone else has a PSP with pixel problems and access to transfering files to their PSP from their computer, check it out and lemme know if it gives you any luck.

i had a hot pixel for about a month, but now it is gone. i have no problems with my psp now

and as for the firmware upgrade Lev, you're still good. you can still play game rips and homebrew, but it does require you to buy GTA. it works like the soft mod for the xbox. if you are interested let me know and i'll post on how to do it

hehe, I got the NintendoDS first !
I still use the 1.5 firmware cause you can play game rips, you need a 2gig memcard for most of them. I even got all the zelda games (emulated) on it so its basicly a gameboy too.
There is a version changer that fools the game and enables you to play it, you shouldnt have upgraded the firmware, I dont think theres a downgrade from 2.6. Have you tried the multiplayer yet? It's pretty cool, racing with other players while relaxing in the bath.
and yeah... back to the subject, the "pixel-fixer" has been runing for 7 hours now and I dont see any results... the fucked-up pixels are still there.

I have no idea about the firmware actually. I am hearing people quite often saying "don't use a version past this or that", but to be quite honest it's all fairly new to me. One thing I do know is I've seen several people on ebay.co.uk peddling supposed "1.5 firmware downgraders".

And on a side note, I'm fairly shocked you even have a PSP! haha, I actually kinda assumed you were too much of a Nintendo loyalist.

What games do you have and what would you recommend?

I have had 3 white pixels for a year now... got used to them. I have the cable, will try out the thing and tell you.
btw, have they cracked the 2+ firmware? I'm tired of the old crack and tired to look for a new.
