Okay, I know poker has become almost as popular as Jesus, but isn't it getting out of hand when we start considering it a "sport"?

I know, I know... poker is the cool new in-thing around the globe and a lot new legion of people are turned onto it. I know poker video games and poker tournaments are popping up everywhere, but isn't it a little odd that an activity that is solely based around gambling and has absolutely no athletic merit is considered a "sport"?

Maybe it's just me...

I was flipping around on my TV card and stumbled upon the "Sports" channel and they were at a poker tournament. I am a bit confused here. I know it's popular and all, but a SPORT?! Come on...

(then again - in my opinion, bowling, golf and other recreational activities where you do not directly affect your opponents performance are not sports but games of comparison).

Am I wrong? Does someone else truly believe poker is a "sport"?

What exactly does the term "sport" mean anymore...?

I'm just as pissed when I see people referring to the huge video game tournaments as sporting activities.

Just because you compete with other people doesn't make the activity a sport - or am I completely wrong here?

quoting xcom:

when they start incorporating physical activity into it then it could be one.... I can only imagine the ilk who love poker most having to abide by asinine rules that involve them getting in shape too. Could be a hell of a time.

Hahaha, that sounds fun

I don't think poker should be considered a sport either
