What are some of those movies that you watched and just sat back kind of shocked afterwards? Not necessarily because it was a big emotional thing but because it was unexpected too. I can think of a few so I will put them down.

-The Usual Suspects (A wonderful ending)
-The Shawshank Redemption
-Fight Club (the end is different than the book. With how close the whole rest of the script was and the dramatic building dropping end this surprised me a lot.)
-Memento
-Se7en (very well thought out)
-The Sixth Sense (should have realized it earlier but didn't)

I'm leaving some out fill in some more!

Right, ok. Gotcdha now. Yeah, i agree, it was nice to see that sort of surprise.

Here's one i think is a surprise ending in that sort of sense: The Omen, and, to the same extent, the Omen 2. Purely becase you really couldn't see Hollywood producers actually letting the bad guy win. I thought that took some balls to do when it was filmed. iot was nice to see it happen for once.

Maybe I should clarify...

It wasn't really how things wrapped up or the cause of it all or anything like that - I agree that this sorta stuff was quite Stephen King-ish..

What I meant in particular was... spoiler how the main character not only put a bullet in the head of his kid but the other 3 "hero" characters.. that sort of thing almost never happens in movies or books - where the good guys lose. it wouldn't have even been surprising in that aspect if it was for the good of the characters, but the fact that moments later you see the army rolling in, indicating it is all taking care of, you really get the sense that it was the complete opposite of a happy ending for the main good guys

Not quite sure why you mentioned The Mist, the ending seemed quite obvious to me...... I like the film, despite some really dreadful acting. I wonder how many people actually understood the film itself though, it's not really something you can get without a good background in King reading.

haven't seen the mist. love stephen king so i read the short story and was really surprised to see that they could get a whole movie out of it.
most films judt don't do his books justice so i had no interest in seeing it. the short story didn't really have an ending, that is, he never told you what it was, and the characters were left hanging, didn't know what happened to it.
might have to rent it now to compare.

DEFINITELY: The Mist

We picked up that Bluray film (after never hearing of it at all) when we saw it in a bin priced less than half of all the other Blurays, and since it said Stephen King, I figured, what the hey.

It was great! I like that movie a lot, and the ending was definitely the biggest surprise ending ever for me, and I liked it a lot because it was so not normal. I don't want to say too much in case you are gonna see it, but typically, western movies always have this sorta idea of how things are supposed to end, and this one took a completely different path.
