I want to know why people in the US vote....I am not 18 yet, but i still see no point in it. Our vote mean mothing what so ever. Its the electorial college that vote for the president....Look at two elections ago. Bewteen Al Gore and Bush....Who had more vote? Gore! and who is president? Bush... It makes no sence to me....And if our votes mean nothing....How can we stop it?

Ummm . . . the voting laws were changed by people working within the system . . . I'm honestly not clear on the link between playing by the rules and unjust voting laws . I think it goes without saying that I think women and blacks should have the same voting rights as any other American .

What I have a problem with is people wanting to change the rules of the game after the fact.

So...women shouldn't be allowed to vote and blacks should still be considered, what, 1/8 of a person?

For a nihilist, you seem to have quite the hard-on for regulations.

I vote for the same reason that I visit and post on this site.
To see my finger print on existance, to share my thoughts, and to let others that might think the same as me that they are not alone. because I know that I don't like being alone.

More democratic . . . I have no problem with "more democratic" . What I have a problem with is people wanting to change the rules of the game after the fact . I think anyone who can cast a vote without any external help (i.e. even people under 18) should be allowed to vote . I think that that same criterion should be the criterion which governs who can be a candidate (i.e. even foreigners) . I think voting day should be a state-mandated paid holiday . I think you should be allowed to register and vote on the same day . I'm in favor of electing multiple candidates for the same position and making them share the authority, so that to make any decision, the various candidates have to cast a weighted vote . For instance, if one candidate got 27% of the vote, he needs (an)other candidate(s) who got greater than another 23% (totalling more than 50%) in the same election to agree with him in order for his course of action to be taken . That's not the point .
The point is that there are rules . If you don't like the rules, you have to work within them to change them . You can't just toss them out for whatever light and transient reason you are moved to action by at the moment .
Another thing . . . we can never really know which candidate has the most support because we don't all go out and voice our support with a ballot .

I'm a nihilist . It's all arbitrary .

Yes the us version of democracy is a little ****ed. if you live in a state which is predominately inclined to one party or the other you vote for president does not count (same in UK but on “constituency”).

What scares me is that you vote for people to vote for you…. And they don’t always vote the way they are supposed to…for a country that is promoting democracy (which is a good idea) there “flavour” is a bit ****ed

Should we toss out the rules of baseball, hockey, racing, and every other competition and declare a winner based on an arbitrary condition, like who got more popular votes...

What's so arbitrary about making the system more democratic?

Elections aren't (or at least shouldn't be) sport. At the end of the day the winner should be the one that most people wanted to win, not the one who garnered the most points in an arbitrary (yes, arbitrary) scheme which was invented for the sole purpose of keeping election results out of the hands of the ignorant masses (and thus hampering democracy).

What is it you want to stop and why should we stop it ?

My vote meant something . I didn't vote for a Democrat two elections ago, and a Democrat didn't win . There are rules the game is played by, and sometimes, playing by the rules means that someone wins on a technicality . In baseball, if you forget to tag home plate after hitting a home run, it doesn't count . In hockey, if you venture into the crease before the puck, any goal you might have scored doesn't count . In racing, if you beat everyone to the finish line, but don't cross it before them, you don't win the race . In U.S. presidential elections, if you don't garner a majority of electoral votes you don't become president . Should we toss out the rules of baseball, hockey, racing, and every other competition and declare a winner based on an arbitrary condition, like who got more popular votes, or which team we like more, or who deserved to win more, or who is older and wiser, etc. ? Imagine if we declared a winner of the Superbowl based on which team has the most fans .
If you want the system changed, you have to work to change it . You have to propose an alternative, a course of action to get from what we have to the alternative, and you have to convince people that the alternative is better than the current system . The way you do that is by either being a government official or by communicating with and empowering government officials to do that on your behalf (or you take up arms and use force against the system, which is a bad idea). The way you empower government officials is by voting for them .
You can sit there and be self-righteous; you may be righteous . If you don't advocate and vote for an idea or person, though, nothing will ever change . I'm reminded of a quote . I'll paraphrase it : "You are not guaranteed success just by working hard, but you are guaranteed failure by not working at all ." .
